NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Salve Regina University women's basketball team won its first home game of the season as the Seahawks posted a 71-60 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Saturday afternoon at the Rodgers Recreation Center.
The Seahawks improve to 2-5 on the season while the visiting Bears fall to 1-5.
Junior Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) paced Salve Regina with a game-high 23 points.
Senior Kerri Beland (Attleboro, Mass.) added 18 points for the Seahawks while senior Tara Burke (Londonderry, N.H.) check in with 14 points.
Senior Kailyn Aguiar (Acushnet, Mass.) posted her second double-double of the season to lead the way for Bridgewater State. Aguiar notched ten points and a game-best 13 rebounds.
Junior Nicole Bostick (Taunton, Mass.) scored a team-best 14 points for the Bears, while senior Olivia DelGrosso (Ledyard, Conn.) tallied 12 points and junior Kayla Carter (Beverly, Mass.) added ten.
The Seahawks outscored the Bears 19-9 in the second quarter to turn a two-point first quarter deficit (17-15) into a 34-26 halftime lead.
After Salve extended their lead to 11 (39-28) in the third quarter following a Beland trifecta, the Bears used a 9-2 run to make it 41-37, with 5:42 remaining in the period. Carter scored four points during the spurt while Bostick capped it off with a three-pointer. The Seahawks, however, answered with six straight points, including a pair of buckets by senior Lauryn Becker (Hanover, Mass.), to make it a ten-point game (47-37).
Bridgewater would get no closer than six points the rest of the way as Salve got up by as many as 15 points (70-55) in the fourth quarter before settling for the 71-60 win.
Salve shot 53% (28-53) for the game including 8-for-17 (47%) from behind the arc, while Bridgewater shot just 31% (19-61) from the floor and 27% (6-22) from three-point range. The Bears held a 42-30 rebounding advantage with an 18-6 edge on the offensive glass.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Tufts University for a seven o'clock game with the sixth-ranked Jumbos.
