Women's Basketball Downs Wellesley, 53-43, at Land of Magic Classic

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Bridgewater State University women's basketball team posted a 53-43 victory over Wellesley College on Thursday afternoon at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The Bears improve to 3-7 with their second straight win, while the Blue fall to 3-5.

BSU junior guard Sara DaSilva (Chelmsford, Mass.) led all players with 13 points as she converted 3 of 7 three-point field goals. DaSilva also added three rebounds, four assists, three steals and a blocked shot.

Junior guard Olivia DelGrosso (Ledyard, Conn.) checked in with 11 points for the Bears, while junior forward Kailyn Aguiar (Acushnet, Mass.) contributed eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench. Six of Aguiar's11 boards came off the offensive glass.

DaSilva and DelGrosso combined for five three-pointers (5-for-10).

The Bears trailed 15-9 with 6:35 remaining in the second quarter but closed out the first half with a 10-1 run to take a 19-16 lead into the break. DelGrosso score eight of her 11 points during the spurt.

Bridgewater would maintain the lead the rest of the way and got up by as many as ten points (27-17) in the third quarter and 13 points on two separate occasions (45-32, 48-35) in the fourth.

The Bears shot 39% (18-46) from the floor, 50% (6-12) from behind the arc and 58% (11-19) at the free throw line.

The BSU defense held the Blue to 30% (17-56) shooting including just 3-for-14 (21%) from three-point range.

The two teams combined for 41 turnovers with the Bears committing 24 miscues.

Sophomore guard Caitlin Aguirre (El Paso, Texas) paced Wellesley with ten points to go along with two rebounds, two assists and three steals. Freshman forward Alyssa Cho (Hillsborough, Calif.) notched nine points and seven boards, while sophomore guard Emily Kopp (King Ferry, N.Y.) tallied eight points on 4 of 6 shooting.

The Land of Magic Classic continues for both teams on Friday. The Bears will take on Bridgewater College (Va.) at 11:00 AM, while the Blue battle Messiah College (Pa.) at 1:00 PM.
