Shelly DePina Named MASCAC Rookie of the Year

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State College freshman forward Shelly DePina has been selected as the 2008-2009 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Basketball Rookie of the Year in voting conducted by the league's coaches.
DePina, who also earned All-MASCAC First Team honors, is the first player in women's basketball history to be chosen as the conference rookie of the year.
In 25 games this season, DePina averaged 10.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals while shooting 47.5% from the floor. The New Bedford, Massachusetts native currently ranks sixth in the MASCAC in field goal percentage and blocked shots (14), seventh in rebounding, ninth in scoring and is tied for fourth in steals.
DePina, who started each of the last 16 games for the Bears, was the only member of the team this season to be chosen as the MASCAC Player of the Week as she took home the honor back on February 2nd.
The BSC women's basketball team posted a record of 14-11 this season with a 7-5 mark in conference play. Seeded third at the MASCAC Tournament, the Bears ended the season with a 61-55 first round loss to Salem State College.
