Women Hoopsters Down Mitchell College, 77-50

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Senior forward Colleen Feeney (Providence, RI) tallied 25 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocked shots to lead the Bridgewater State College women's basketball team to a 77-50 victory over Mitchell College this evening from the Tinsley Center in Bridgewater.

The Bears have now won seven straight games as they are 7-1 on the season.  The 7-1 record is the best start for the BSC women's hoops program since the 1984-85 season when the Bears won 26 of their first 27 games and finished with a 26-2 record.

For Feeney it was her seventh double-double of the season in as many games as she connected on 10 of 12 field goal attempts and 5 of 5 free throws in just 22 minutes of action.

Senior guard Caitlin Feeney (Providence, RI) was the only other Bear in double figures as she finished with 12 points to go along with 5 assists. 

Eleven different players scored for BSC which shot 46% (27-for-59) from the floor and 80% (20-for-25) from the charity stripe.  The Bears also dished out 20 assists in the game with Feeney and senior guard Melissa Murphy (Rockland, MA) registering 5 apiece. Murphy also added 9 points and 5 steals.

Bridgewater, which out-rebounded the Pequots by a margin of 53-36, blocked 10 shots in the game and limited Mitchell to just 27% (19-for-71) shooting.

BSC opened the game by scoring the first 16 points as Mitchell finally got on the board at the 14:40 mark of the first period after over a five minute scoring drought.  Feeney tallied 9 of the Bears' first 11 points and finished with 17 points and 8 rebounds in the first half as BSC took a 40-26 lead into the locker room.

Bridgewater started the second half on a 13-2 run to put the game well out of reach.  The Bears' lead ballooned to as high as 29 points (73-44) with 4 ½ minutes to go before the horn sounded with a final score of 77-50.

Sophomore forward Michaela Johnson (Riverside, RI) had a solid game off the bench for the Bears as she tallied 6 points to go along with 6 rebounds in 15 minutes.

The Pequots were led by junior guard Shakeya Evans (Manchester, CT) who finished with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 7 steals. Sophomore guard Jennifer Iglesias (Bristol, CT) chipped in with 16 points and 4 boards.

Bridgewater is now off until December 28th and 29th when the Bears travel to Dayton, Florida for the Land of Magic Classic.  The Bears will take on Hamline College at noon on the 28th and the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse at 10 AM on the 29th.  Mitchell travels to MCLA on Wednesday for a 5 o'clock game with the Trailblazers.
