NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Bridgewater State University on Tuesday afternoon at the Clark Softball Field.
The host Lyons improve to 8-4 with the two wins, while the visiting Bears fall to 2-10.
Game One
Senior righthander Shelbi Wilson (Peabody, Mass.) tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Lyons to a 3-0 victory in the opener. Wilson (4-3) scattered five hits, walked two and fanned one. She stranded seven runners on base including the bases loaded in the fifth.
Wheaton pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning without the benefit of a hit as the Lyons took advantage of three BSU errors in the frame.
The Lyons tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out, pinch hit RBI double off the bat of sophomore Clara DeCarvalho (Franklin, Mass.).
Freshman righthander Kelley Reichert (Milford, Mass.) pitched well for the Bears in the setback as she allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits in the complete game effort. Reichert (0-4) walked two and struck out one.
Sophomore Hannah Arkin (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and senior Jade Assad (Lambertville, N.J.) each went 2-for-3 to pace the Lyons' six-hit attack.
Freshman Alexandra Taylor (Hebron, Conn.) was 2-fo-3 at the plate to highlight the BSU offense. Junior Samantha Mulcahy (Taunton, Mass.) and freshman Emma Healy (Plymouth, Mass.) also reached safely multiple times for the Bears. Mulcahy went 1-for-2 with a walk, while Healy went 1-fo-3 and also walked.
Game Two
Freshman righthander Sarah Pritchard (Malta, N.Y.) hurled a completer game shutout to lead Wheaton to the 5-0 victory in game two and a sweep of the twinbill. Pritchard (4-0) scattered six hits, walked one and fanned two.
The Lyons broke open a scoreless game with a four-run, third inning. Wheaton banged out six hits in the frame including a two-run single by Assad and a back-to-back RBI doubles by Pritchard and senior Emily Schlapak (Dover, N.H.).
An RBI double off the bat of freshman Katelyn Barton (Andover, N.H.) in the bottom of the sixth capped off the scoring for the Lyons.
Schlapak went 3-for-3 with the RBI double to highlight the Lyons' 13-hit attack. Pritchard went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI, while Arkin was 2-for-4 with a run.
Freshman Megan Sharon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) singled twice in three at bats to lead the Bears' offense in game two. Mulcahy went 1-for-2 with a walk.
Junior righthander Natalie Sorrenti (Bridgewater, Mass.) took the loss in the circle for the Bears in relief of the starter Reichert. Sorrenti (2-3) gave up five runs on 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings of work. She did not issue a walk and struck out three batters.
The Bears are back in action on Thursday afternoon (3:00 PM) when they entertain Rhode Island College in a non-conference doubleheader.
