Softball Sweeps MCLA in MASCAC Doubleheader

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University softball team swept a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader with MCLA on Sunday afternoon at the Zavattaro Complex.

Bridgewater State won the opener, 13-1 in five innings, and completed the sweep with a 9-1 victory in five innings in game two. Both games were stopped due to the eight-run mercy rule.

The visiting Bears improve to 14-16 on the season and 6-4 in the MASCAC, while the host Trailblazers fall to 6-18 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

Natalie Sorrenti (Bridgewater, Mass.) picked up a pair of wins in the circle for the Bears as she went the distance in each game. Sorrenti (6-1) allowed a run on six hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts in game one, and gave up a run on three hits and walk with two strikeouts in the nightcap.

The Bridgewater offense amassed 22 runs, 25 hits, nine walks and two hit batters in the two games. The MCLA defense committed seven errors on the afternoon which led to ten unearned runs.

In the opener, Samantha Mulcahy (Taunton, Mass.) reached safely in all four plate appearances as she went 2-for-2 with a home run, a pair of walks, three runs scored and two RBI to highlight the Bears' 16-hit attack. The homer marked Mulcahy's second of the season. Jenny Heller (Taunton, Mass.) also homered for the second time this season. Heller was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, two runs and four RBI.

Alexandra Ruprecht (Kingston, Mass.), Tabitha Domeij (Westborough, Mass.) and Meghan Navarro (Taunton, Mass.) also finished with multiple hits in game one. Ruprecht went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Domeij went 2-for-4 with a double, two run and an RBI and Navarro was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.

Rebecca Uschmann (Feeding Hills, Mass.) was on base all four times in the nightcap as she singled twice, walked twice and scored a run. Courtney Gouveia (Taunton, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base and scored two runs, while Ruprecht banged out a pair of hits in four at bats, scored a run and drove in one. Kacie Carvalho (Fairhaven, Mass.) went 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI.

Samantha Feinstein (South Yarmouth, Mass.) suffered the loss in the circle for the Trailblazers in game one. Feinstein (3-8) allowed 13 runs (nine earned) on 16 hits with three walks and one strikeout. Kara Adams (Walden, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss in game two. Adams gave up seven runs (one earned) on six hits and five walks. She fanned three and hit a batter.

Both teams host MASCAC doubleheaders on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears take on Mass. Maritime Academy at 3:30, while the Trailblazers battle Westfield State University at two.
