BSU Softball Named NCAA Statistical Champion

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University softball team finished the 2017 season as the NCAA Division III statistical champion for double plays turned per game.

The Bears recorded 26 double plays over 35 contests during the 2017 campaign for an average of 0.74 per game. Fourteen of the 26 double plays were of the ground ball variety, while 12 were on balls caught in the air.

Senior first baseman Morgan Cox (Dennis Port, Mass.) was involved in 21 of the 26 double plays while senior second baseman Courtney Leddy (Saugus, Mass.) had a hand in 12. Junior shortstop Kristyna Flaherty (Burlington, Mass.) and freshman third baseman Shannon Grindle (Halifax, Mass.) were each part of seven turned double plays.

The BSU Department of Athletics will receive a plaque from the NCAA commemorating the softball team's achievement as a statistical champion.
