Softball Wins Both Ends of MASCAC Twinbill with Framingham State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University softball team swept a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader against Framingham State University in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Park.

The Bears, who extended their winning streak to eight games, won each contest by identical scores of 9-1. Both games also went just five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Bridgewater State improves to 23-13 on the season and 9-3 in the MASCAC. The Bears are the #2 seed in next week's MASCAC Tournament and will host a game on Friday afternoon at four versus an opponent to be determined. Framingham State ends the season with an overall record of 13-25 (5-9 MASCAC).

Prior to the game, the Bears honored senior Karissa Pagan (Brockton, Mass.) who was playing in her final regular season home game.

Kelly McCarthy (Burlington, Mass.) tossed a pair of complete game victories in the circle for the Bears. McCarthy (19-5) allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts in the opener, and gave up a run on six hits with five punch-outs in the game two. She did not issue a walk in ten innings of work.

Framingham committed nine errors in the twinbill including six in game two.  The nine miscues led to ten unearned runs.

In game one, the Bears banged out 13 hits led by McCarthy's 3-for-4 performance at the plate. She scored a run an drove in one.

Courtney Leddy (Saugus, Mass.), Samantha LoPilato (Medford, Mass.), Kristyna Flaherty (Burlington, Mass.) and Jackie Welch (Hubbardston, Mass.) also finished with multiple hits.

Leddy went 2-for-3 with a walk and run, while LoPilato was 2-for-3 with two runs and a pair of runs batted in. Flaherty and Welch both went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and two RBI apiece.

Natasha Arseneau (Waltham, Mass.) suffered the loss in the circle for the Rams in game one. Arseneau (7-5) gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks over three innings. 

Morgan Cox (Dennis Port, Mass.) and Kacie Carvalho (Fairhaven, Mass.) paced the BSU offense in game two. Cox singled twice in three at bats and stole a base, while Carvalho went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Tara McCann (Fall River, Mass.) checked in with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly in four plate appearances.

Jessica Pietersen (Norton, Mass.) picked up the loss in game two for the Rams. Pieterson (2-9) gave up six runs, only two of which were earned, on eight hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings of work.
