Six Bears Selected to All-MASCAC Softball Team

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Six Bridgewater State University student-athletes have been selected to the 2015 All-MASCAC Softball Team which was announced today by the league’s Director of Media Relations, Emily Diekelmann.

Senior shortstop Jocelyn Bettencourt, sophomore second baseman Courtney Leddy, sophomore catcher Jackie Welch and sophomore designated player Breanna Shaffer were voted to the All-MASCAC First Team by the league’s coaches, while junior centerfielder Karissa Pagan and sophomore Kelly McCarthy were second team honorees. McCarthy was named to the second team as both a pitcher and first baseman.

The BSU softball team wrapped up regular season play with an overall record of 23-17 including a 9-5 mark in conference play. Seeded third in the MASCAC Tournament, the Bears host a single-elimination round game on Thursday afternoon at three o’clock against #6 Framingham State University.

Bettencourt enters the MASCAC Tournament with a .360 batting average (36-100). The Plymouth, Massachusetts product ranks fourth in the MASCAC in triples (3), fifth in runs scored (26) and walks (11), sixth in stolen bases (6) and eighth in hits (36).

A native of Saugus, Massachusetts, Leddy is batting .415 (44-106) with seven doubles, three triples and 22 RBI. She leads the MASCAC in hits (44) and ranks third among the conference leaders in batting and fourth in triples, RBI and on base percentage (.447). Leddy is also eighth in runs scored (23) and slugging percentage (.538), and ninth in doubles.

Welch, who replaced sister Jill (’14) as the Bears’ starting catcher, is currently sporting a .342 batting average (27-79) in her first season of collegiate softball with ten doubles, three home runs and 20 RBI. The Hubbardston, Massachusetts resident leads the MASCAC in doubles and ranks third in the conference in home runs, fifth in slugging (.582), eighth in walks (10), and tenth in both RBI and fielding percentage (.993).

Shaffer, who hails from Plainville, Massachusetts, is hitting .404 (40-99) with 13 stolen bases and 31 runs scored out of the leadoff slot. She is seconds in the conference in both runs scored and hits (40), and is also fourth in batting and seventh in on base percentage (.422).

Pagan has produced a .307 batting average (23-75) with four doubles, a pair of triples and 11 runs scored. The Brockton, Massachusetts native leads the MASCAC with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage as she has not committed an error in 27 chances while patrolling center field.

McCarthy has excelled at both pitcher and first base for the Bears in 2015. The Burlington, Massachusetts product is 7-3 in the circle with a 2.27 earned run average and 43 strikeouts in 64 2/3 innings of work. In 12 appearances, including seven starts, she has seven complete games to her credit as well as four shutouts and opponents are batting just .227 against her. McCarthy is third in the MASCAC in wins and ERA and ranks ninth in complete games and tenth in strikeouts.

At the plate, McCarthy has produced a .378 batting average (37-98) with a home run, four triples, six doubles and 28 RBI. She is second in the conference in triples, third in RBI, seventh in both hits (37) and slugging percentage (.551), and ninth in batting.
