Alyssa Verronneau Named MASCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State College junior right-hander Alyssa Verronneau has been named the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week for her outstanding performance at the MASCAC Tournament. This marks Verronneau's third MASCAC Pitcher of the Week honor this season and fourth of her career.

Verronneau, a native of Acushnet, Massachusetts, pitched Bridgewater State to the MASCAC Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Championship as she went 3-0 with a 0.78 earned run average and 28 strikeouts in 18 innings of work.

Verronneau went the distance and struck out 14 in the Bears' 4-2 opening game win over Framingham State. She the tossed a complete game two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as Bridgewater knocked off Westfield State, 4-0, in the winner's bracket championship game. Verronneau capped things off by hurling four shutout innings of relief as the Bears won the tournament title with a 5-1 win over Westfield State.

In 29 appearances in the circle for the Bears this season, Verronneau is 16-5 with five saves, 158 strikeouts and a 1.96 earned run average.  She has made 21 starts with 19 complete games and seven shutouts, and has pitched 146 2/3 innings.  Verronneau ranks among the top three in the MASCAC in wins, ERA, strikeouts, innings pitched, appearances, game started, complete games, shutouts, batting average against and saves.

The Bears will be making the program's 20th appearance in the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament and ninth appearance in the last eleven years. BSC is seeded sixth at the seven-team New England Regional hosted by Rhode Island College.  The Bears (26-15) will take on third seeded Saint Joseph's College of Long Island (30-6) on Thursday at noon.
