BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --- The Bridgewater State
College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with
Eastern Connecticut State University this afternoon at Alumni Park.
After dropping the opening game, 12-1, in five innings, the Bears
came back to earn the split with a 6-1 victory in game
two.
In game two, BSC junior righthander Alyssa
Verronneau (Acushnet, MA) gave up one run over seven
innings of work while scattering six hits. Verronneau (8-4) also
struck out six and hit three batters.
In her last four games, Verronneau is 4-0 with a 1.12 ERA with 37
strikeouts in 25 innings of work. The complete game was her
12th of the season and she lowered her ERA to 2.49.
Eastern Connecticut jumped on the board first with their only run
of the game on a solo home run by sophomore Kim
Church (Framinghton, CT-SS) in the top of the second.
Bridgewater State responded, taking the lead for good
on a two-run double by junior Stacy Capodiece
(East Lyme, CT-3B) in the bottom half of the inning.
The Bears tacked on four more runs over the last four innings of
the game, highlighted by a solo-home run by junior Melissa
McNamara (Stoughton, MA-SS) in the bottom of the sixth.
Bridgewater banged out ten hits in game with Capodiece, senior
Danielle Trull-Donahue (Stoughton, MA-1B) and
junior Rachael Sprague (Duxbury,
MA-SS) leading the way with two hits apiece.
Freshman Caitlin Cravens (Ellsworth, ME) was
tagged for the loss on the mound for the Warriors. Cravens (6-3)
lasted just two innings giving up two runs on four hits.
In game one, junior righthander Katie Pensiero
(Stamford, CT) pitched four scoreless innings until the Bears broke
up the shutout on an RBI single by senior Ciana
Godin (Worcester, MA) in the bottom of the fifth. Pensiero
did not allow a hit until senior Nicole Hebert
(Taunton, MA-2B) singled with one out in the fourth.
Bridgewater State College committed five miscues in the field
while Eastern Connecticut banged out 14 hits en route to their
victory.
Junior Rachel Denny (East Haddam, CT-1B) led the
way for the Warriors going 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in the
top of the fifth. Senior Krystle Denny (West
Haven, CT-C) went 3-for-4 with one run scored while Church and
sophomore Ashley Sullivan (Trumbull, CT-CF) each
finished 2-for-3. Church crossed the plate twice and plated one run
while Sullivan tallied three RBI’s.
Sophomore Jamie Ducinski (Duxbury, MA) absorbed
the loss for BSC. In three innings of work, Ducinski (1-3) allowed
three runs (two earned) on six hits to go along with a strikeout
and a walk.
Bridgewater State (12-14) will take-on MASCAC foe Framingham State
College in a doubleheader starting tomorrow at 2:30 P.M. at
Framingham. Eastern Connecticut (15-7) will travel to Keene, NH
when they are hosted by the Owls on Saturday at 1 o'clock in a
Little East Conference match-up.
