BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College softball team spilt a doubleheader with Wheaton College this afternoon at Alumni Park. After dropping the opening game, 7-1, the Bears came back to earn the split with a 6-0 shutout victory in the night cap.
In game two, BSC junior right-hander Alyssa Verronneau (Acushnet, MA) dominated from start to finish as she hurled a complete game, seven-hit shutout. Verronneau did not walk a batter and struck out three as she improved to 4-3 on the season.
The Bears opened the scoring in the third inning as junior center fielder Allie LeBlanc (Somerset, MA) knocked in a pair of runs with a bases loaded single. Senior second baseman Nicole Hebert (Taunton, MA) followed with an RBI single to give BSC a 3-0 lead.
BSC made it a 4-0 game in the fourth as junior Stacy Capodiece (East Lyme, CT) opened the inning with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single by senior catcher Lindsey Allison (South Easton, MA). The Bears rounded out the scoring with a pair of runs in the sixth as Allison led off the frame with a double and scored on an RBI single by senior first baseman Danielle Trull-Donahue (Stoughton, MA). Trull-Donahue would later come around to score on an RBI single by LeBlanc.
LeBlanc finished 3-for-4 with three runs batted in while Donahue went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Allison scored a run and drove in one as she was 2-for-3 in game two. Hebert also finished 2-for-3 with a run batted in.
Freshman pitcher Courtney Collier (Bolton, MA) took the loss in the circle for Wheaton as she went three plus innings giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits. Sophomore Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA) was touched for a pair of runs in three innings of relief as she allowed four hits and struck out two.
In the opening game of the twinbill, Wheaton senior Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA) shut down the Bears giving up just one run on five hits while walking two and striking out ten. Her only mistake was a solo home run by junior second baseman Rachael Sprague (Duxbury, MA) which tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second.
The Lyons broke the 1-1 tie with a four-run third inning highlighted by an RBI single by senior third baseman Erika Marini (Pawtucket, RI) and an RBI double by freshman designated player Nicole DeRosa (Greenwich, CT). Wheaton was also aided in the inning by a pair of throwing errors which led to one unearned run.
Wheaton added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings on RBI doubles by DeRosa and Marini.
Marini went 3-for-4 in game one with two runs and two RBI, while DeRosa finished 2-for-4 with a run and a pair of runs batted in. Senior left fielder Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI) also finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and junior center fielder Brady Benton (Concord, NH) went 2-for-4 with a couple of runs scored.
Sophomore pitcher Jillian Vancelette (Charlton City, MA) suffered the loss for the Bears as she was charged with six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. Sophomore Jamie Ducinski (Duxbury, MA) allowed a run on three hits while striking out two in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
LeBlanc doubled and singled in three at bats in game one as she finished 5-for-7 for the doubleheader.
Bridgewater (6-10) travels to Tufts University tomorrow afternoon for a pair of games with the Jumbos. The opening game of the twinbill starts at 3 PM. Wheaton (17-5) takes on Babson College tomorrow with game one of the doubleheader getting underway at 3.
