Stewart’s Win Paces Bears at Ray Dwyer Invitational

WARWICK, R.I. -- While the weather may have been sunny, the course was tough for the Bridgewater State cross country teams on Saturday at Goddard State Park in Warwick, RI for the Ray Dwyer Invitational, hosted by Rhode Island College. The runners spent much of the day dodging large obstacles on trails covered in soft sand. There would be no personal bests set on this course.

Saturday's biggest story was junior co-captain Brian Stewart. Stewie took his 1st ever college invitational win on a hot, sunny day when conditions were less than ideal for any runner. His winning time of 30:10 was over 3 minutes off his personal best from last week, showing that the RIC course was much slower than any course the athletes usually run on.  Coming across the line 2nd for the Bears was freshman Lowell Chumsae in a time of 31:20, good enough for 5th place. In the 3rd spot for the second week in a row was junior co-captain Tim Barrow in 6th place. Tim came through only 18 seconds behind Lowell in a time of 31:38.  Rounding out the scoring for the men were freshmen Stevie Matthews and Dan Slyne in 21st and 23rd. Newcomers Bryan Ruel and Shaun Henry tasted their first college cross country meet action. The men took 2nd place as a team.
