Matthew Lighten Named MASCAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Rookie of The Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University freshman Matthew Lighten has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) GEICO Men’s Indoor Track & Field Rookie of the Week. GEICO is the proud sponsor of the MASCAC weekly awards program.

Lighten finished seventh in the 60-meter dash with a career-best time of 7.17 seconds at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University this past weekend. The Dalton, Massachusetts product also finished 42nd out of 195 sprinters in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.20 seconds as he was competing in the event for the first time this season.

Lighten currently ranks 43rd in all of Division III in the 200 and sixth among Division III New England student-athletes.

The BSU men's track & field team has earned each of the first seven MASCAC Rookie of the Week awards to open the indoor season. Freshman Matthew Cronin (Weymouth, Mass.) garnered the honor on December 3rd, while classmate Jacob DeAndrade (Taunton, Mass.) picked up the accolade on December 10th and four straight weeks from January 14th to February 4th.

Next weekend, the BSU men's indoor track & field team will compete at the MASCAC Championships hosted by Plymouth State University.
