BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University junior Joshua Higgins has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) GEICO Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week. GEICO is the proud sponsor of the MASCAC weekly awards program.

Higgins captured top honors in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:23.44 at the RIC Invitational this past weekend as he qualified for both the Division III New England Championship and NEICAAA Championships in the event. The Fitchburg, Massachusetts native also ran a leg on the Bears’ 4x400-meter relay squad which won the meet title with a time of 3:29.75.

Higgins currently ranks first among Division III New England athletes in the 600-meter run, while the Bears’ 4x400-meter relay team, featuring Higgins, classmate Lamont Haynes (Boston, Mass.) and sophomores John Lara (South Bostonb, Mass.) and DeAndre Thomas (Montgomery, N.J.), ranks 19th in all of Division III.

Higgins currently holds the BSU indoor record in the 800-meter run (1:53.00) which he set last season at the Tufts Final Qualifying Meet. He is also a part of the Bears' indoor and outdoor 4x400-meter relay marks.

Last season, Higgins made his debut at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships as he placed 12th in the 800-meter run and ninth, along with Haynes, Lara and Michael Kotleski, in the 4x400-meter relay.

After the holiday break, the BSU indoor track & field teams will be competing at the Tufts Invitational on Saturday, January 12th.
