BSU Track & Field Coaches Amy Delgado & TJ Smith Resign

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University Director of Athletics, Dr. Marybeth Lamb, announced today that Amy Delgado and TJ Smith have resigned from their respective positions as head coaches of the women’s and men’s track & field programs due to personal reasons.

“BSU as a whole, and I personally, were so fortunate to have both Amy and TJ on staff here,” said Lamb. “They both will truly be missed.”

“Hiring Amy as head coach of the women’s track team was a fantastic addition to the program back in 2014,” Lamb noted. “She elevated the team to a new, exciting national presence.”

“TJ’s presence on both the cross country team as an assistant coach, and the men’s track and field teams as head coach was a significant presence on the coaching staff and throughout the department,” Lamb added.  “TJ is a model of how you want a coach to be. He is not only a great recruiter, develops outstanding skills in his athletes, but is also concerned for his student-athletes overall well-being.”

Delgado leaves after serving four seasons as the head coach of the women’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams from 2014 to 2018. During her tenure, the Bears captured three Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) championships, two indoor (2015, 2016) and one outdoor (2015).

Five different student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships under Delgado’s guidance including junior Jayci Andrews who competed at both the indoor and outdoor championships in 2016 and 2018 while garnering All-American honors with a second place finish in the 100-meter hurdles this past May. Samantha Richner ‘18, who made three NCAA appearances, earned All-American accolades in the high jump at the outdoor championships in 2016.

Smith was named the Bears' head track and field coach as well as the assistant cross country coach prior to the 2007-2008 academic year. He served as the head coach for both the men's and women's track & field programs for five seasons from 2007 to 2012. Starting with the 2012-2013 campaign, Smith continued his role as head coach of the men's indoor and outdoor track & field teams while also serving as the distance coach for the women's program.

The men’s team captured six MASCAC championships during Smith’s tenure, three indoor (2013, 2015, 2018) and three outdoor (2012, 2013, 2018). Sixteen different student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships under his guidance including five-time All-American hurdler, Conor Murtagh ‘17, and the 2015 national triple jump champion, Chris Perry. All told, there were 17 All-American performances recorded since Smith took the reins in 2007.

The University is examining the track and field program’s structure to determine future hiring strategies for the positions.
