DeAndrade Leads Men’s Outdoor Track & Field at BSU Bears Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Freshman Jacob DeAndrade (Taunton, Mass.) won a pair of individual events to lead the Bridgewater State University men's outdoor track & field team at the season-opening BSU Bears Invitational on Saturday at Swenson Field.

The Bears won the team title with 110 points. Division II Merrimack College finished second with 84.5 points, while Division I Northeastern University rounded out the top three squads with 76 points.

DeAndrade placed first in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash in his first collegiate outdoor meet. DeAndrade posted a time of 11.01 seconds in the 100 and 23.23 seconds in the 200.

Senior Joseph Keough (Walpole, Mass.), junior Lamont Haynes (Boston, Mass.) and sophomore DeAndre Thomas (Montgomery, N.J.) also won individual events for the Bears. Keough placed first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:16.73, while Haynes captured top honors in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.77 seconds. Thomas outdistanced the field in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 3.75 inches (13.81m).

Haynes also place second in the 200-meter with a time of 23.37 seconds.

Juniors Spencer Geary (Marlborough, Mass.) and Nick Johnson (Marstons Mills, Mass.), and sophomore John Lara (South Boston, Mass.) added second-place performances for Bridgewater State. Geary posted a height of ten feet, 11.75 inches (3.35m) in the pole vault, while Johnson tossed the discus 139 feet, seven inches (42.55m) and Lara recorded a time of 52.08 seconds in the 400-meter dash.

Senior Zach Belcher (Halifax, Mass.), freshman Kyle Koehler (Swansea, Mass.), sophomore Nikolas Beshere (Winthrop, Mass.) and junior Joseph Celia (Bridgewater, Mass.) rounded out the Bears' top-five place-winners. Belcher finished fourth in the discus (126'7"/38.58m), while Koehler placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (17.02). Beshere and Celia placed fourth (34:05.22) and fifth (34:25.75), respectively, in the 10,000-meter run.

DeAndrade (100), Haynes (400), Thomas (triple jump) and Johnson (discus) all qualified for the Division III New England Championships.

Next weekend, the Bears will compete at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic.
