Men's Track & Field Opens Indoor Season at 7th Annual UMass Boston Open

ROXBURY, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University men's track & field team opened the indoor season at the non-scoring Seventh Annual UMass Boston Indoor Open on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Junior Joshua Higgins (Fitchburg, Mass.) captured top honors in the mile run as he posted a Division III New England Championships qualifying time of 4:24.11. Classmate Trevor Wysong (Taunton, Mass.) placed second in the mile (4:30.02), while senior Joseph Keough (Walpole, Mass.) was third (4:31.62).

Sophomore DeAndre Thomas (Montgomery, N.J.) placed third in the finals of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.05 seconds as he qualified for DIII New Englands and the NEICAAA Championships. Thomas also finished sixth in the 200 with a DIII New England qualifying time of 23.00 seconds.

Junior Lamont Haynes (Boston, Mass.) finished third in the 200-meter dash (22.68) and sixth in the 400-meter dash (51.37) as he qualified for DIII New Englands in both events.

Sophomore John Lara (South Boston, Mass.) placed seventh and qualified for DIII New Englands in the 400 (51.44).

In the field events, sophomore Joshua Moore (Cape May, N.J.) placed third in the long jump (22'1.75"/6.75m), while freshman Matthew Cronin (Weymouth, Mass.) finished fifth in the shot put (44'4.75"/13.53m) and junior Nick Johnson (Marstons Mills, Mass.) tied for sixth in the weight throw (51'4.25"/15.65m). All three qualified for the Division III New England Championships in their respective events.

Junior Spencer Geary (Marlborough, Mass.) and freshman Kyle Koehler (Swansea, Mass.) rounded out the Bears' top ten performers. Geary finished eighth in the pole vault (12'7.5"/3.85m), while Koehler checked in at tenth in the high jump (6'0.75"/1.85m).

Next Saturday, the BSU track & field teams will compete at RIC Invitational.
