BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Easter Nazarene College men's tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over Bridgewater State University on Thursday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Lions improve to 14-7 on the season, while the host Bears fall to 2-9.
The match also marked Senior Day for host Bridgewater State as the BSU coaching staff and underclassmen honored two seniors, Alexander Belinsky (Norton, Mass.) and Stephen Reddington (West Bridgewater, Mass.).
Eastern Nazarene swept the three doubles matches and captured five of the six singles flights.
In doubles play, junior Henry Siercke (Hamburg, Germany) and sophomore Julius Opaschowski (Hamburg, Germany) teamed up for an 8-1 win at the top flight, while the freshman pairing of Diego Rodriguez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Tim Schoengens (Inden, Germany) earned an 8-3 victory at the second spot. Junior Alberto Escobar (Sevilla, Spain) and classmate Kyle Pierson (Redding, Calif.) rounded out the Lions' doubles winners with an 8-0 triumph at number three.
Siercke cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 straight set win at first singles, and Rodriguez clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 straight set victory at number third. Opaschowski also won in straight sets for the Lions in singles competition as he posted a 6-0, 6-3 decision at the second flight.
Freshman Miguel Lopez Dial (Madrid, Spain) and junior Corey Davis (Derby, Vt.) each battled back from a set down to cap off the scoring for Easter Nazarene as both matches were decided with a super tie-breaker. Lopez Dial recorded a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 win at number five, while Davis posted a 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 at the sixth flight.
Freshman Kendan DeBlois (Hadley, N.Y.) won in straight sets for the Bears at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-1. DeBlois is now 10-1 on the season in singles play.
The Bears wrap up regular season play on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Castleton University for a one o'clock Little East Conference match with the Spartans. The Lions host Colby-Sawyer College in the semifinal round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament on Saturday also at one.
