BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The UMass Boston men's tennis team remained unbeaten in Little East Conference play as the visiting Beacons posted an 8-1 victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Beacons improve to 10-4 on the season and 6-0 in the Little East, while the host Bears fall to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
UMass swept the three double matches and captured five of the six singles flights to secure the win.
Freshman Nandish Shah (Ahmedabad, India) and sophomore Miguel Beltran (Ashland, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-3 victory at first doubles, while freshman Roy Platteel (Holbrook, Mass.) and senior Ray Platteel (Holbrook, Mass.) paired up for an 8-1 decision at the second flight. Sophomore Alexander Comerchero (Brookline, Mass.) and junior Onkgopotse Mokoka (Pretoria, South Africa) rounded out the Beacons' doubles victors with an 8-2 win the third spot.
Roy Platteel (6-2, 6-4), Comerchero (6-4, 6-0) and Mokoka (6-0, 6-4) all won in straight sets for UMass in singles play at the first, second and fourth flights, respectively. Ray Platteel battled to a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 decision at number three, while senior Tin Tran (Saigon, Vietnam) posted a 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 triumph at the sixth flight.
Freshman Kendan DeBlois (Hadley, N.Y.) picked up the Bears' lone point with a 6-4, 6-4 straight set win at number five singles. DeBlois is now 9-1 in singles play on the season and 5-1 against Little East opponents.
Both teams are back in action on Thursday afternoon with non-conference games. The Bears entertain Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30, while the Beacons travel to Clark University for a three o'clock match with Cougars.
