Men's Tennis Opens 2019 Campaign with 7-2 Win over Southern Maine

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team opened the 2019 season with a 7-2 victory over Little East Conference (LEC) rival University of Southern Maine on Sunday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The host Bears (1-0, 1-0 LEC) swept the three doubles matches and won four of the six singles flights. The visiting Huskies fall to 0-2 (0-1 LEC) on the young season.

In doubles play, sophomore William Jones (Wrexham, United Kingdom) and senior Alexander Belinsky (Norton, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-2 win at the top flight, while sophomore Jeff Pavao (Somerset, Mass.) and freshman Colin Lamusta (Lynnfield, Mass.) earned an 8-1 victory at the second spot. Junior Joshua Bean (Kingston, Mass.) and freshman Kendan DeBlois (Hadley, Mass.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 decision at number three.

DeBlois posted a 6-0, 6-0 straight set victory at the sixth singles flight. Bean then secured the decisive fifth point for Bridgewater State with a 6-2, 6-1 straight set triumph at number four. Pavao and Lamusta rounded out the Bears' singles winners as they each won in straight sets at the second (6-2, 6-2) and third (6-1, 6-1) flights, respectively.

Lamusta and DeBlois each recorded their first collegiate wins in both doubles and singles competition. Jones and Pavao were also making their debuts in a BSU uniform.

Sophomore Adam Papayoanou (Valencia, Calif.) won the top flight single match as he battled back from a set down to post a 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 decision. Junior Kyle Morin (Lewiston, Maine) picked up the Huskies' other point with a 6-4, 6-4 straight set victory at the fifth flight.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain Wentworth in a non-conference match on Tuesday afternoon at three. The Huskies are off until Saturday afternoon when they travel to UMass Boston for a one o'clock Little match with the Beacons.
