Matt Charest Named Little East Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the second time this season and fifth time in his career, Bridgewater State College junior Matt Charest has been named the Little East Conference (LEC) Men's Tennis Player of the Week.

A native of Somerset, Massachusetts, Charest earned the honor for his performance as he led the Bears to a perfect 3-0 mark last week which included Little East wins over Southern Maine and Rhode Island College.

Charest was undefeated in both singles and doubles play on the week, competing out of the top flight in each.

In Bridgewater State's 8-1 win over the Huskies, Charest knocked off Josh Warren in three sets (4-6, 6-0, 10-7) at first flight singles and then teamed with Giovanni Cuscina for an 8-5 win at first doubles.

Charest then helped lead the Bears to an 8-1 win over Clark as he won in straight sets at first singles (6-2, 6-1) and teamed with Cusina once again for an 8-3 victory at first doubles.

Charest capped off his stellar week by defeating the Anchormen's top flight player Lorne Teeter in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) as the Bridgewater State knocked off the Rhode Island College, 7-2. Charest paired up once again with Cuscina at first doubles for an 8-1 win.

The Little East Conference first flight singles champion a year ago, Charest is currently 7-4 in both singles and doubles play this season.  In three seasons at Bridgewater State he is 24-10 competing exclusively in the top flight singles slot.

Bridgewater State is currently 6-5 on the season and 2-3 in the Little East.  The Bears take on UMass Dartmouth this afternoon to end the regular season, and then host the Little East Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
