BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College men's tennis team earned their third straight win as the Bears downed Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College, 7-2, this afternoon from the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts in Bridgewater.
Bridgewater (5-5) captured five of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles flights to come away with the conference victory. The Bears are now 2-3 in Little East play this season. RIC falls to 5-6 overall and 1-4 in the LEC.
Junior co-captain Matt Charest (Somerset, MA) and senior co-captain Barry Gorman (Hopedale, Ma) led the Bears to the win over the Anchormen.
Charest won in straight sets at first flight singles, 6-0, 6-0. He also teamed with junior Giovanni Cuscina (Mansfield, MA) for an 8-1 victory at first doubles. Cuscina won his singles match in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, at the third flight.
Gorman won his tenth straight singles match as he remains undefeated in singles play this season. Competing at the second flight, Gorman battled to a three set win, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. He teamed up with junior Brendon Barbo (Yarmouthport, MA) for an 8-0 victory at second doubles. Barbo posted a three set win at fifth flight singles, 7-5, 0-6, 6-1.
Freshmen Gonzalo Gomez (Wilmington, VT) rounded out the other singles winner for the Bears at the fourth flight. Gomez battled to a straight set win, 6-0, 7-6. The final set was decided by a 7-2 tie-breaker.
BSC travels to Curry College on Monday afternoon for a 3:30 non-conference match with the Colonels.
