Smith Garners Honorable Mention Honors, Sets 200 Breaststroke Mark at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Bridgewater State University senior Richard Smith (Milford, Mass.) garnered Honorable Mention All-American honors and broke his own school record in the 200 breaststroke on Saturday evening at the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming & Diving Championships held at the IU Natatorium on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus.

Smith placed fifth in the consolation finals and 13th overall in the 200 breaststroke at the national championship meet with a time of 2:03.37. He eclipsed his previous mark of 2:03.41 set this morning in the preliminaries.

Smith is the Bears' first Honorable Mention All-American at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships since Andy Fuccillo accomplished the feat on the three-meter diving board back in 2003. BSU Hall of Famer Michael Arsenault earned All-American accolades with a 12th place finish in the 100 freestyle back in 1976.

Earlier this week, Smith finished 32nd out of a field of 48 swimmers in the 200 individual medley on Wednesday with a time of 1:52.96. On Thursday, he finished 18th out of 33 competitors in the 400 individual medley with a school-record time of 3:59.45.
