Men's Soccer Blanks Worcester State, 1-0, on Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University men's soccer team posted a 1-0 shutout victory over visiting Worcester State University on Senior Day at Swenson Field. The game marked the regular season finale for both teams.

The Bears improve to 4-13-1 on the season and 3-4 in the MASCAC, while the Lancers fall to 8-9-1 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Both teams wrap up regular season play tied for fourth place in the MASCAC standings along with Westfield State University.

The Bears are now 25-20-2 versus the Lancers since 1980.

Junior midfielder Stanislaus Sokolov (Reading, Mass.) staked Bridgewater State to a 1-0 lead just over six minutes into the game. Stationed on the right side of the six, freshman forward David Nelson (East Bridgewater, Mass.) corralled a long throw-in from classmate Joseph Madden Jr. (Milford, Mass.) and flicked the ball over to Sokolov who one-timed a shot inside the near post for his third goal of the season.

The Lancers had a goal called back due to an offside in the 42nd minute. Worcester State, in fact, was flagged for nine offside calls throughout the contest.

The Lancers finished with a 17-9 shot advantage for the game as well as an 8-0 edge in corner kicks attempts. Only three of Worcester's 17 shots, however, were on frame.

BSU senior goalkeeper Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) turned aside all three shots as he recorded his 25th career win and 14th shutout.

Senior netminder Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) made four saves in the setback for the Lancers.

Prior to the game, the Bears honors seniors Justin Borges (Milford, Mass.), Michael Da Silva (Milford, Mass.), Zachary Ells (Douglas, Mass.) and Morgado.

Bridgewater State is seeded sixth in next week's MASCAC Tournament. The Bears will travel to #3 Fitchburg State University on Tuesday night for a seven o'clock opening round game with the Falcons. Worcester State is seeded fourth and will host #5 Westfield State University on Tuesday afternoon at four.
