Men's Soccer Edged by MIT, 1-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The MIT men's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on late Wednesday afternoon at rain-soaked Roberts Field.

The Engineers improve to 5-1-5 on the season, while the visiting Bears fall to 2-9-1 on the year.

Freshman forward Will Seiple (Boulder, Colo.) netted the game's only goal in the 48th minute to lift MIT to the non-conference victory.

Bridgewater State nearly got on the board in the closing minutes of the first half on a shot by junior midfielder Dominic Berthiaume (North Dighton, Mass.), but MIT junior defender Aaron Makikalli (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) cleared it off the line to keep the game scoreless heading into the break.

Seiple finished a cross from the left side by junior Loukas Carayannopoulos (Westfield, N.J.) just 2:04 into the second half. For Carayannopoulos, the assist marked his first of the season.

MIT nearly doubled its advantage late in the contest. Sophomore midfielder Noah Faro (Rexford, N.Y.) was called offside in the 77th minute after a shot found the back of the net. In the 87th minute, senior forward Ivan Jutamulia (Berkeley, Calif.) rang one off the crossbar.

The Engineers held a 16-10 advantage in shots, while the Bears took four of the game's seven corner kicks.

MIT senior keeper Jeremy Cowham (Quincy, Mass.) made seven saves to record his 17th career shutout. Senior netminder Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) turned aside six shots between the pipes for Bridgewater State.

MIT is now 9-3-3 in the all-time series with Bridgewater State, which dates back to 1927, and 2-0-2 in the last four meetings.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers host Springfield College in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match at one, while the Bears travel to Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Salem State University to take on the Vikings at three.
