BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Freshman midfielder Robson Montrond (Brockton, Mass.) broke a scoreless tie midway through the second half to lift the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Westfield State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Homecoming Saturday at Swenson Field.
The host Bears improve to 7-6 on the season and 3-2 in the MASCAC, while the Owls fall to 4-5-2 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play.
Montrond scored off a give-and-go with senior midfielder Kessy Alves (Praia, Cape Verde) in the 66th minute of play. Montrond drove a shot inside the left post from 13 yards out for his second goal of the 2018 campaign.
Early in the second half, junior forward Justin Borges (Milford, Mass.) one-timed a shot off the crossbar.
BSU junior goalkeeper Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) turned aside five shots to record his seventh win of the season and second shutout. Three of Morgado's five saves came in the final 12 minutes.
Bridgewater finished with a 15-13 shot advantage as well as an 8-3 edge in corner kick attempts.
Sophomore Tyler Diotalevi (Ludlow, Mass.) made five saves in the setback for the Owls.
The Bears travel to UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday night for a seven o'clock game with the Corsairs. The Owls are off until next Saturday when they head to Fitchburg State University to take on the Falcons at noon in a MASCAC matchup.
