Men's Soccer Drops 7-2 Decision to Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Six different players scored for the Salve Regina University men's soccer team as the host Seahawks cruised to a 7-2 victory over Bridgewater State University on Wednesday afternoon at Reynolds Field.

Salve improves to 2-0 on the young season, while the visiting Bears fall to 2-1.

Senior midfielder Matthew O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.), senior forward John Julian (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), junior forward Donald Igo (Needham, Mass.), junior midfielder Evan MacDonald (Candia, N.H.), sophomore defender Casey Kelly (Waldwick, N.J.) and freshman forward Matthew Warshaw (Madison, N.J.) all scored for the Seahawks who also picked up an own goal.

O'Donnell buried a penalty kick attempt 2:26 into the game and Julian found the back of the net just 45 seconds later to give the hosts a quick 2-0 lead. Junior defender Josh Mitchell (Stoughton, Mass.) potted his first goal in a BSU uniform off an assist from junior defender Zachary Ells (Douglas, Mass.) in the 17th minute to cut the deficit in half. The score would remain 2-1 until after the break.

Igo extended the Seahawks advantage to 3-1 in the 55th minute and MacDonald converted another penalty kick in the 62nd minute to make it a 4-1 game. Just 50 seconds later, senior midfielder Kane Moran (Perth, Australia) scored on a penalty kick to pull the Bears' to within two. The scoring strike marked the first of the season for Moran and tenth of his career.

An own goal in the 74th minute followed by back-to-back tallies from Kelly and Warshaw less than two minutes apart put the finishing touches on the Seahawks' 7-2 victory.

Salve held a decided 24-9 edge in shots as well as a 7-1 advantage in corner kick attempts.

Bridgewater State played with a full squad for less than three minutes. A red card just 2:26 into the game led to O'Donnell's penalty kick goal and reduced the Bears' on-field lineup to ten. A second red card in the 65th minute dropped them to nine.

BSU junior netminder Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) made nine saves in the setback, while senior goalkeeper Michael Payan (Fort Lee, N.J.) made just one save to pick up the win.

The Bears are back in action on Friday afternoon when they welcome the Saints of Emmanuel College to Swenson Field. Game time is slated for 3:30 PM. The Seahawks take on Newbury College at Hormel Stadium in Medford, Mass. on Saturday afternoon at 4:30.
