BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior forward Filipe Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) potted the game-winning goal with 49 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference win over UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday night at Swenson Field.
The Bears improve to 4-8-3 on the season, while the Corsairs fall to 3-7-1.
Gomes ripped a shot from 23 yards out that went off the hand off a diving UMass goalkeeper and found its way inside the left post. The goal marked Gomes' team-leading sixth of the season, 21st of his career and 54th career point. He now ranks tenth all-time in BSU men's soccer history in scoring.
Sophomore midfielder Elvis Mendes (Brockton, Mass.) got the visitors on the board in the 59th minute as he scored off a header from the top of the six following a goal line cross from senior midfielder Austin Dias (Smithfield, R.I.). Senior forward Junior Robert (Providence, R.I.) also picked up an assist on Mendes' second goal of the season.
Senior midfielder Cody Shannon (Norton, Mass.) tied the game at 1-1 off a corner kick in the 77th minute. Junior midfielder Kane Moran (Perth Australia) assisted on the marker as his header off the corner rang the crossbar. Shannon hopped on the rebound and buried a shot into the right side of the net for his first collegiate goal.
Bridgewater held a slight 18-17 shot advantage as well as a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
BSU sophomore Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) made six saves to record his fourth win of the season. Freshman Mike Tranghese (Monson, Mass.) turned aside seven shots in the setback for the Corsairs.
Head Coach Brendan Adams was coaching in his 300th game since taking the reins of the BSU men's soccer program in 2002.
The Bears entertain Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Mass. Maritime Academy on Saturday at noon, while the Corsairs travel to Worcester State University on Thursday night for a seven o'clock non-conference game with the Lancers.
