Men's Soccer Battles MIT to 0-0 Double Overtime Tie

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University and visiting MIT played to a 0-0 double overtime tie in a non-conference men's soccer game on Wednesday night at Swenson Field.

The host Bears see their record go to 2-8-3 on the season while the visiting Engineers are now 4-5-3 overall.

The game marked the fifth straight overtime contest for Bridgewater State and seventh on the season. The Bears are 0-4-3 in overtime games.

Bridgewater dodged an own goal late in the first half as an MIT corner kick attempt was headed wide of the far post by a BSU defender.

The Bears' best scoring opportunity in the second half came in the 77th minute off a long throw-in, but junior midfielder Kane Moran's (Perth, Australia) shot from top of the six was blocked by an MIT defender. Moments later, a header attempt by sophomore defender Tim Alzamora (Holden, Mass.) off a corner sailed over the net.

MIT sophomore forward Isaac Perper (Tiburon, Calif.) ripped a shot just over the crossbar in the 85th minute. Then, with just under two minutes remaining in regulation, Alzamora cleared the ball off the line on a shot by senior midfielder Nate Johnson (Sudbury, Mass.) off a corner kick.

Bridgewater finished with an 18-16 shot advantage, while MIT held a 12-5 edge in corner kicks.

BSU sophomore goalkeeper Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) made three saves to record his fourth shutout of the season. Sophomore Jeremy Cowham (Quincy, Mass.) turned aside four shots for the Engineers as he also notched his fourth shutout of the 2017 campaign.

Bridgewater is 1-2-2 versus MIT since the two teams first met back in 2012. Last season at MIT, the game also ended in a 0-0 double overtime tie.

The Bears travel to Westfield State University on Saturday morning for an 11 o'clock MASCAC game with the Owls. The Engineers entertain NEWMAC rival Clark University on Saturday afternoon at one.
