Men's Soccer Falls to Worcester State in Overtime, 1-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – A header goal in overtime by senior defender Matthew Dent (Ludlow, Mass.) lifted the visiting Worcester State University men's soccer team to a dramatic 1-0 victory over Bridgewater State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Friday night at Swenson Field.

The Lancers improve to 6-4 on the season and 3-1 in the MASCAC, while the host Bears fall to 2-7-2 overall and 0-3-1 in conference play.

Dent headed home a corner kick attempt sent into the box by freshman midfielder Dillon Pooler (Southampton, Mass.) 6:34 into the first overtime session.

Shots in the game were even at 13 apiece. Four of the Lancers' 13 shots came in overtime.

Worcester senior netminder Jason Barrett (Spencer, Mass.) made four saves to record his fourth win of the season and second shutout. BSU sophomore goalkeeper Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) turned aside two shots in the setback.

Both teams had opportunities in the first half. Barrett made a diving stop on a shot by BSU junior forward Filipe Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) from 15 yards out less than three minutes into the game. A quality scoring chance by sophomore midfielder Joseph Cruise (Brockton, Mass.) from ten yards out in the 12th minute was blocked by a Worcester defender. The Lancers had a goal called back due to an offside call in the 35th minute.

The Bears travel to Wheaton College on Sunday afternoon for a two o'clock non-conference game with the Lyons. The Lancers entertain non-league rival Rhode Island College next Tuesday night at seven.
