Men's Soccer Plays to 0-0 Double Overtime Draw

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University and visiting Roger Williams University played to a 0-0 double overtime draw in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday night at Swenson Field.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) made five saves to record his third shutout of the season for the host Bears, while RWU senior netminder Nick Nelson (Madison, Conn.) turned aside nine shots for his second shutout of the 2017 campaign.

Bridgewater held an 11-5 shot advantage in a scoreless first half. Nelson made a nice diving stop of a Kane Moran (Perth, Australia) shot from 23 yards out that was labeled for the left side of the net in the 22nd minute. Moran also had two header shots in the period that were just off the mark.

Bears' freshman forward Kevin Roberts (Medway, Mass.) ripped a low shot from 30 yards out wide of the left post early in the second half. Moments later, Morgado knocked one over the crossbar on a shot off the right foot of sophomore midfielder Colby Decker (Colchester, Conn.) from 32 yards out.

A header attempt by Hawks' senior defender John McCarthy (Torrington, Conn.) off a corner kick sailed over the bar in the 83rd minute.

Bears' junior forward Filipe Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) had the game-winner on his foot with just 29 seconds remaining in regulation, but Nelson made a terrific diving save to stop the semi-breakaway attempt.

The two teams combined for eight shots in the two overtime periods. McCarthy's header of a cross in the second OT went over the crossbar. Later in the session, Morgado came up with a key stop and also punched away a cross in the box.

Bridgewater finished with a 28-17 shot advantage, while Roger Williams held the 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

There were eight yellow cards issued in the game including four in overtime. The Hawks were whistled for 23 fouls, while the Bears were flagged for ten.

In upcoming action, the Bears (2-6-2) host Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Worcester State University on Friday night at seven. The Hawks (6-4-3) travel to Salve Regina University on Saturday for a noontime Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup with the Seahawks.
