Bridgewater, Mass. -- Junior forward Filipe Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde), junior midfielder Kessy Alves (Brockton, Mass.) and freshman forward Kevin Roberts (Medway, Mass.) each tallied second half goals to lead the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over visiting Plymouth State University on Friday night at Swenson Field.
The host Bears improve to 1-1 on the young season with the win, while the Panthers slip to 1-2.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) turned aside four shots to record his first shutout of the season and third of his career.
Gomes broke a scoreless tie in the 61st minute as he converted off a nice feed from junior midfielder Jameson Bradley (Westborough, Mass.). Bradley split the defense with a long thru ball and found a streaking Gomes coming down the left side. Gomes corralled the pass in stride and beat the diving netminder with a shot inside the far post.
Alves extended the BSU lead to 2-0 in the 77th minute. Junior midfielder Kane Moran (Perth, Australia) setup the goal with a high-arcing pass from midfield to the top of the 18. Alves beat the Plymouth goaltender to the ball and slipped a shot into the unguarded net. The goal marked Alves' first in a BSU uniform.
Roberts put the finished touches on the win with his first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute. Roberts scored on a breakaway as he got behind the defense, dribbled around the PSU keeper and buried a shot into the wide open net.
Morgado preserved the shutout with a diving stop late in the game on a direct kick attempt from 27 yards out by senior forward Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia).
Senior Jimmy Mansour (Auburn, N.H.) and sophomore Owen Caggiano (Sandwich, Mass.) split the game in between the pipes for the Panthers. Mansour played the first 45 minutes and made two saves. Caggiano was saddled with the loss as he also made two saves in 45 minutes of action.
Bridgewater held a 22-11 shot advantage including a decided 14-3 edge in the second half. Corner kicks were 5-2 in favor of the visitors.
In upcoming action, the Bears entertain Salve Regina University on Monday afternoon at 3:30, while the Panthers host Tufts University on Sunday afternoon at four.
