Men's Soccer Drops 4-0 Decision to #10 UMass Boston

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Mohamed Kenawy (Revere, Mass.) tallied a goal and two assists to lead the tenth-ranked UMass Boston men's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout victory over host Bridgewater State University on Wednesday night at rain-soaked Swenson Field.

The visiting Beacons improve to 9-0 with their eighth shutout of the season. The Bears fall to 2-5-1 overall.

Senior midfielder Edmilson Barros (Praia, Cape Verde) scored on a corner kick in the 12th minute of play to give the Beacons the early 1-0 lead.

Junior midfielder Joshua Kang (Brockton, Mass.) extended the advantage in the 23rd minute as he blasted a shot from 30 yards out that deflected off the left post and in. Kenawy picked up the assist on the goal with a short crossing pass to the middle of the field.

Freshman forward Ocane Williamson (Spanishtown, St. Catherine, Jamaica) outmuscled a BSU defender to score from just outside the six less than five minutes into the final stanza with Kenawy notching his second helper of the night. For Williamson, the goal marked his team-leading ninth of the season.

Kenawy capped off the scoring in the 70th minute with his seventh goal of the campaign as he beat the BSU keeper one-on-one with a shot inside the right post. Sophomore midfielder Denis Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) sent Kenawy in on the semi-breakaway.

Kenawy nearly scored again just a few minutes later, but was stopped on a penalty kick attempt by BSU freshman netminder Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.). Morgado then stoned Kenawy with an outstanding kick save in the 74th minute.

UMass held a 32-6 shot advantage for the game including an 18-1 edge in the second half. The Corsairs also finished with an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.) made three saves to record his seventh win of the season. Castro-Dreher played the first 58 minutes before giving way to classmate Aidan Carter (Weymouth, Mass.) as the duo combined on the shutout. Carter did not face a shot.

Morgado turned aside seven shots in the setback for the Bears.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Framingham State University on Friday afternoon for a 4:30 MASCAC game with the Rams. The Beacons head to Little East rival University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon. Game time is slated for 2:30 PM.
