BSC Mens Soccer Rallies Past Salem State in Double Overtime, 2-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - In MASCAC men's soccer action, freshman midfielder Donald Flores (Cranston, RI)notched the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to lift the host Bears of Bridgewater State College to a 2-1 victory over Salem State this afternoon in Bridgewater.
With the win, Bridgewater improves to 6-8-2 on the season and 4-2 in the MASCAC, while Salem dips to 10-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play. The Bears also snapped a three-game losing streak against the Vikings. Flores received a pass from junior forward Jon Nutting (Rockland, MA) on the left wing just outside the 18-yard box, and turned and fired a shot that snuck under the cross bar and into the far side of the goal. The goal, Flores' third of the season, came with just 2:46 remaining in the second overtime period.
Salem had taken a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by junior forward Jared Barbosa (Lowell, MA) in the 70th minute of play. Junior defender Jon Machado (Weymouth, MA), however, would notch the equalizing goal in the 81st minute off a restart from midfield. Machado drilled a direct kick from 57-yards out that may have deflected off a Salem player and beat the goalie to the right side of the net.
Seven yellow cards were issued in a game that was chippy at times. Bridgewater received four of the yellows and was whistled for as season-high 34 fouls in the match. Salem out-shot the Bears by a fairly narrow margin of 17 to 14, while the Vikings also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. BSC sophomore netminder Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, MA) played a solid game in goal for the Bears as he turned aside 9 shots. Salem junior Pawel Brzykcy (Krakow, Poland) made 3 saves between the pipes for the Vikings, including stopping a one-on-one opportunity just 15 seconds before the winning goal was scored.
Bridgewater State has two games remaining in the regular season. The Bears host UMass-Dartmouth on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 before heading to Framingham State for a key MASCAC match with the first place Rams. BSC could earn the top seed in the upcoming MASCAC Tournament with a win over the Rams coupled with a loss by Worcester State. Salem hosts the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday night at 6 PM.
