Rocky DeAndrade Named MASCAC Men's Basketball Co-Rookie of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University freshman guard Rocky DeAndrad has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men’s Basketball Co-Rookie of the Week. DeAndrade shares the weekly honor along with Salem State University freshman forward Drew Healy.

DeAndrade scored 11 points in 18 minutes off the bench while adding two rebounds and a steal in the Bears’ 84-77 overtime victory over #15 ranked MIT.  The Mansfield, Massachusetts native also shot 60 percent (3-of-5) from the floor, including 2-for-4 from the three-point range, in the win over the Engineers.

In eight games this season, DeAndrade is averaging 6.1 points, 1.1 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting 47% (16-34) from the field, 82% (9-11) at the free throw line and 53% (8-15) from behind the arc.  The rookie has also committed just six turnovers while averaging 15.4 minutes of playing time.

DeAndrade currently ranks second in the MASCAC in three-point shooting and is tied for 15th in the conference in steals.

DeAndrade came to Bridgewater State after an outstanding basketball career at Mansfield High School.  He was named the Hockomock League MVP as a senior captain in 2013-2014 and was also selected to the Boston Herald All-Scholastic Team and the Sun Chronicle All-Star Team.  As a junior, DeAndrade helped the Hornets capture the Eastern Massachusetts Division I Tournament championship.

The  BSU men’s basketball team is currently 5-3 on the young season. The Bears will take on Manhattanville College on Friday, January 2nd (4:00 PM) and host New York University on Saturday, January 3rd (2:00 PM) at the NYU Holiday Classic.
