Field Hockey Blanks Southern Maine, 4-0

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Samantha Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) had two goals and an assist to lead the Bridgewater State University Bears to a 4-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Bridgewater State, playing in its second LEC contest to start the season, is now 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the LEC.  The Bears have not allowed a goal earning back-to-back shut out victories while outscoring their opponents, 10-0.

The loss is the third straight for the Huskies, dropping their record to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the LEC.

Southern Maine recorded the first shot and the first penalty corner of the game, but it was all Bridgewater State after the opening minutes. BSU went on to lead USM 17-8 in shots and 17-3 in penalty corners.

Hayes started the Bears' scoring in the 12th minutes converting an assist from freshman Emma Daly (Foxborough, Mass.). BSU would take the 1-0 lead into the break.

The Bears potted three more goals in the second half to put the game out of reach. Senior Tori O'Dea (South Dennis, Mass.) scored her first goal of the year in the 44th minute before Hayes made it 3-0 in the 53rd with her third goal of the young season. Hayes helped BSU to its fourth and final goal with her second assist of the season finding junior Julianne Kilduff (Bellingham, Mass.) in the circle for her third goal of the 2017 campaign in the 62nd minute.

Junior Allison Chappell (Raynham, Mass.) got the start in goal for the Bears, making five saves in 58:40, before giving way to sophomore Jillian DeLaney (Foxboro, Mass.) who played the final 11:20 and did not have to make a save.

Southern Maine freshman Anna Huff (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) made five saves for the Huskies.

Southern Maine returns to action in its second home contest of the weekend facing non-conference opponent Manhattanville on Sunday (1:00 p.m.).  Bridgewater State takes on non-conference opponent Wellesley on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) at home.
