Jaren Alves Named MASCAC Football Rookie of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University freshman cornerback Jaren Alves has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) GEICO Football Rookie of the Week. GEICO is the proud sponsor of the MASCAC weekly awards program.

Alves notched his first two collegiate interceptions, including one that he returned 39 yards for a touchdown, in the Bears’ 34-19 New England Bowl victory over Salve Regina University. The East Providence, Rhode Island native also broke up two passes and recorded three tackles (two solo).

In 11 games this season, Alves recorded 41 tackles (29 solo) with two interceptions and eight pass breakups. He tied for fourth in the MASCAC in pass breakups and tied for tenth in interceptions.

Alves is the third different member of the Bridgewater State football team to garner MASCAC Rookie of the Week honors. Sophomore linebacker Michael Rosa (Uxbridge, Mass.) and freshman linebacker Steven Silvia (Dighton, Mass.) also earned the accolade with Silvia picking up the award twice.

The BSU football team wrapped up the 2018 campaign with an overall record of 8-3. The Bears finished tied for second in the MASCAC standings with a 6-2 conference mark.
