Jonathan Marrero Named MASCAC Football Defensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University senior cornerback Jonathan Marrero has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Football Defensive Player of the Week.

Marrero forced all three turnovers in the Bears’ 24-22 win on the road over UMass Dartmouth this past weekend. The Boston, Massachusetts product notched two interceptions and forced and recovered a fumble. He also broke up a pass and recorded a pair of solo tackles.

The Bears scored ten points off Marrero's three forced turnovers as his two interceptions led to a touchdown and a field goal. Marrero's first interception came in the end zone for a touchback. He returned his second pick 25 yards into UMD territory.

After starting the first three games of the season at quarterback, Marrero transitioned to cornerback and has started each of the last three games in the BSU secondary. He has a team-leading three interceptions and two forced and recovered fumbles to go along with seven solo tackles and a pass breakup.

The BSU football team is currently 2-5 on the season and 2-3 in the MASCAC. The Bears host Western Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 PM as part of Homecoming Weekend.
