Nine BSC Gridironers Named to NEFC All-Bogan Division Team

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Senior captain Jeff Smith (Danvers, MA) headlines the nine Bridgewater State College representatives selected to the 2009 New England Football Conference (NEFC) All-Bogan Division Team. The 2009 Offensive Lineman of the Year joins fellow senior captain Tony Cina (TE, Hanson, MA) and senior free safety Josh Duquette (Plymouth, MA) on the All-Bogan Division First Team.

Senior captains Casey Florence (LB, Bridgewater, MA) and Chris Dijak (DT, Lunenburg, MA) were selected to the All-Bogan Division Second Team along with seniors John Ferbert (LB, East Bridgewater, MA) and Joel Nunes (OL, Taunton, MA),and juniors Justin Fuller (RB, Berkley, MA) and Chris Grande (C, New Bedford, MA).

The 2009 BSC football team, under the guidance of Head Coach Chuck Denune, posted a record of 7-3 with a 5-2 mark in NEFC divisional play.  The Bears' offense set the program single-season record with 3,057 rushing yards, breaking the previous mark of 2,961 yards set back in the 2003.  Bridgewater is currently ranked fifth in all of Division III in rushing offense with 305.7 yards per game.

On the defensive side, the Bears are ranked 13th in all of Division III in pass defense (133.9ypg), 18th in third down efficiency (28.47%) and fumbles recovered (18), and 20th in defensive pass efficiency rating (95.12).

Smith, a fixture at the right guard position, played and started every single game in his entire four-year career.  He was an All-Bogan Division First Team selection as well a D3football.com All-East Region Third Team selection in 2008.  Over the last four seasons, Bridgewater State rushed for 11,189 yards and 117 touchdowns thanks in part to Smith and his fellow offensive linemen. 

A phenomenal run blocking tight end, Cina earns his third consecutive NEFC All-Bogan Division First Team honor. He wraps up his career at BSC with nine receptions for 211 yards and two touchdowns.

Duquette is the only BSC defensive representative on the All-Bogan Division First Team.  The recognition marks the second time that Duquette has earned the honor as he was a first team selection in 2007 as well. This season,Duquette led the Bears in interceptions with three to go along with two pass breakups and 25 tackles (20 solo). In three seasons defending the back end of the BSC defense, he has amassed a total of 71 tackles (52 solo), nine interceptions and 11 pass breakups.

Florence was named to the NEFC All-Bogan Division Team for the third straight year as he was also recognized for his hard nose play from the linebacker position following his sophomore (second team) and junior (first team) seasons. In 2009, Florence tallied 66 tackles (42 solo), ranking him third on the team. He also chipped in with two sacks to go along with two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and an interception. A four-year starter and two-time captain, Florence has amassed a total of 222 tackles (147 solo), three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, three sacks and an interception.  He played in all 40 games for the Bears over the last four years with 38 straight starts.

Dijak also notched his third consecutive NEFC All-Bogan Division honor, as he was named to the first team in both 2007 and 2008.  This season, he registered 45 tackles (29 solo), six tackles for loss, two sacks and two forced fumbles from the defensive tackle position.  In four years at Bridgewater, Dijak played in all 40 games and started each of the last 37 after cracking the starting lineup in week four of his freshman season.  All told, he put together an impressive stat sheet piling up 218 total tackles (145 solo), 36.0 tackles for loss and 16.5 sacks while forcing five fumbles and recovering four fumbles.

Ferbert earns his first NEFC All-Bogan Division selection.  In 2009, he led the Bears in tackles with 90 (56 solo) while also chipping in with two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and an interception.  In four seasons with the Bears, Ferbert collected a total of 153 tackles (95 solo), three fumble recoveries, two fumbles forced, two sacks and an interception.

In his first season at Bridgewater State, Fuller had an instant impact on the field for the Bears. The big back carried the load in the backfield as he finished the season with 1,375 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns on 212 carries.  His singles-season rushing totals for yards and touchdowns are second only to Brendan Kavey's 2005 school marks of 1,400 yards and 20 touchdowns. Fuller currently ranks seventh in all of Division III in rushing with 137.5 yards per game and is tied for seventh in scoring with 11.4 points per game.

Nunes and Grande round out BSC's nine representatives on the NEFC All-Bogan Division Team.  Along with Smith and Cina, the two helped pave the way for an impressive Bears' offensive attack in 2009.  With Grande at center and Nunes at left guard, mixed with Smith at right guard and Cina at tight end, the foursome anchored an offensive unit that racked up 3,797 yards of total offense as well as 41 touchdowns.  The BSC offensive line opened holes for 34 rushing touchdowns on the year and allowed just 11 sacks.
