Baseball Falls to Top-Seeded Westfield in MASCAC Tournament

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Shane Bogli tossed seven shutout innings as top-seeded Westfield State University rolled to a 10-2 win over #5 Bridgewater State University in the MASCAC Baseball Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Hagan Field.

With the win, the Owls (25-13) advance in the winners' bracket and will host #3 Framingham State University on Thursday afternoon at three.

The Bears (17-21) will play in an elimination game against #2 Fitchburg State University at three o'clock on Thursday at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire.

Framingham defeated Fitchburg, 8-6, in 12 innings today in the other half of the MASCAC Tournament bracket which was played at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough.

Bogli (7-2) scattered four hits, did not issue a walk and fanned two as he earned his seventh win of the season.

Westfield got off to a fast start in the bottom half of the first inning as Colin Dunn led off with a triple down the left field line, and Anthony Crowley followed with a two-run homer to left to stake the Owls to the early 2-0 lead.

Westfield added five runs in the fourth, loading the bases on three straight walks, before Michael Cruz singled home two runs, and Dunn ripped his second triple of the day just inside the third base bag to drive in two more. Dunn scored on a Crowley ground out to make it a 7-0 game.

The Owls tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Westfield loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a Dunn single. Crowley was hit by a pitch to force in the first run of the inning.  Two batter slater, Aaron Clancy was hit by a pitch to drive in the Owls' ninth run of the day.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jared Ferrari was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch to extend the lead to 10-0.

Bridgewater scored their two runs in the top of the ninth. Back-to-back walks to Lewis Robinson and Matt McDonald and a base hit by Dominic Precopio loaded the bases with nobody out. Robinson scored on a wild pitch and Colin Josselyn knocked in McDonald with a sacrifice fly.

Dunn finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI, while Crowley went 2-for-4 with four runs driven in.

Kevin Bresciani was the lone Bear with multiple hits as he singled twice in three at bats. Bresciani, who has a team-best 14 multi-hit games this season, leads Bridgewater State with a .398 batting average and a .482 on base percentage.

BSU pitching allowed ten runs on nine hits, eight walks, three hit batsmen and three wild pitches. Starter Matt Josselyn (2-4) took the loss for the visitors as he worked the first four innings.
