Baseball Picked 8th in MASCAC Preseason Poll

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University has been picked to finish eighth in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) as the 2018 MASCAC Baseball Preseason Poll was released today by MASCAC Director of Media Relations, Emily Loux.

The Bears received 15 points in this year's poll.

Westfield State University, the 2017 conference regular season champions, is the preseason favorite to win the 2018 MASCAC Baseball Championship as voted on by the coaches. The Owls received 45 points in this years poll, including five first place votes.

Heading into Coach Rick Smith's farewell season, the squad will be led by senior captains Connor Birch (P, Bellingham, Mass.), Randy Frazier (3B, Wareham, Mass.), Drew Gentile (C, Lynn, Mass.), and Reed Pike (1B, Bellingham, Mass.).

Senior shortstop Matt Levasseur (Milton, Mass.) is back in the middle infield after batting .311 and collecting 33 hits, including five doubles and a home run with 15 RBI to earn a spot on the 2017 All-Conference team.

Bridgewater opens up their season on Saturday, March 3rd with a doubleheader (1:00pm) against The Apprentice School in Vero Beach, Florida. The Bears are slated to begin MASCAC play on Friday, March 30th (2:00pm) as they host the Vikings of Salem State in a twinbill.
