Baseball Blanks Wheaton, 1-0

NORTON, Mass. -- An RBI double by senior left fielder Alex Carey (East Bridgewater, Mass.) in the top of the ninth inning broke a scoreless tie and lifted the Bridgewater State University baseball team to a 1-0 victory over Wheaton College on Wednesday afternoon at Sidell Stadium.

The visiting Bears, who were playing in their first game since March 9th, improve to 4-6 on the season with the win, while the host Lyons fall to 7-9.

With the score deadlocked at 0-0, senior first baseman Reed Pike (Bellingham, Mass.) walked to lead off the top of the ninth inning and advanced all the way to third on an errant pick-off attempt. Carey then lined a double down the left field line to plate Pike with the lone run of the game.

Junior right-hander Colin Josselyn (Hanson, Mass.) pitched very well for the Bears but did not figure in the decision. Josselyn tossed 7 1/3 scoreless innings, scattering four hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts. He retired the side in order in the first, fourth, sixth and seventh innings.

After giving up a lead off double and hitting a batter in the third inning, Josselyn proceeded to set down 14 of the next 15 batters.

Senior left-hander David Manning (North Attleboro, Mass.) picked up the win in relief as he came on with a runner on and one out in the bottom of the eighth. After hitting the first batter he faced, Manning (2-0) induced a fly out to right and then got out of the jam with a strikeout to strand the go ahead run at third base.

Senior Jarrett Archambault (Seekonk, Mass.) recorded his first save in a BSU uniform as he retired all three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth. Archambault entered the game with a runner on first and left him there.

Pike reached safely three times to pace the Bridgewater offense as he went 2-for-3 with a walk. Carey finished 2-for-4 at the plate, while senior second baseman Tyler Morini (Plymouth, Mass.) also recorded multiple hits (2-for-5) for the Bears.

Freshman right-hander Gavin Reily (Bridgewater, Mass.) got the start for Wheaton on the mound and tossed 7 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up five hits and a pair of walks while striking out five. Freshman righty John Mikosz (Southington, Conn.) was saddled with the loss in relief for the Lyons. Mikosz (0-1) allowed a run on two hits and walk in an inning of work. He also fanned two.

Senior second baseman Ryan McKeon (Johnston, R.I.) was the only Wheaton batsmen with multiple hits as he went 2-for-3 with a double.

The Bears left nine runners on base (six over the last three innings), while the Lyons stranded seven.
