Baseball Wins Fourth Straight

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University baseball team posted a 9-5 victory over UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action on Monday afternoon.

The Bears improve to 6-6 on the season with their fourth straight win, while the host Corsairs fall to 10-10.

Bridgewater State was paced by junior Alex Carey (East Bridgewater, Mass.) who went 2-for-4 at the plate, driving in a game-high four runs.

Carey singled to left field to score the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. UMass responded in the bottom half of the inning as junior Kenny Michael (Norwood, Mass.) ripped a two-run single to give the Corsairs a 2-1 lead.

Bridgewater State then broke the game open in the top of the second. The Bears capitalized on a two-out error by plating six runs on four hits to gather a 7-2 advantage. Back-to-back two run doubles by Carey and junior Tyler Morini (Plymouth, Mass.) highlighted the inning.

Junior Zach Courier (Mansfield, Mass.) knocked a timely two-run double for the Corsairs to cut the Bears' lead down to three (7-5)  in the bottom of the seventh.

Bridgewater got the two runs right back in the top of the eighth on an RBI single off the bat of junior Matt Levasseur (Milton, Mass.) and a bases loaded walk to Carey.

Levasseur finished 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs and two RBI. Junior Billy Mitchell (Walpole, Mass.) also had multiple hits for the Bears as he went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

BSU senior Ryan Feeney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks, a run and an RBI as he extended his season-long hitting streak to 12 games.

Senior left hander Samuel Devine (Bourne, Mass.) worked the first three innings on the mound for Bridgewater State. Devine gave up two runs on three hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts.

Sophomore Justin Jacobsen (Fairhaven, Mass.) picked up the win in relief as he worked the final six innings. Jacobsen (1-0) allowed three runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Junior right hander Michael Theriault (Boston, Mass.) tossed five relief innings for the Corsairs. Theriault gave up two runs on four hits and a pair of walks and three strikeouts.

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30. UMass hosts Salve Regina University, while Bridgewater State entertains Eastern Connecticut State University.
