WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College baseball team capped off the regular season schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Becker College this afternoon in Worcester. The Bears captured game one of the twinbill by a score of 6-3, and completed the sweep with a 6-0 win in game two.
Mark Zuccaro (1-0) picked up the win in relief in game one as he went three innings giving up two runs on two hits while walking one and striking out one.
Joe Caparotta earned his first save of the season as hurled the final three innings allowing a run on just two walks. Caparotta did not give up a hit and struck out two.
The Bears banged out 12 hits in the opener with Steve Smith (2-for-3), Tom Couet (2-for-4), Brian Medairos (2-for-4) and Brad Koneski (2-for-2) collecting two hits apiece.
With the game tied at 1-1, Bridgewater rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth highlighted by a two-run single by J.T. Mooney.
Becker pulled to within one with single runs in the fourth and the fifth inning. BSC however pushed across a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Couet and a sacrifice fly by Mark Claffey.
Dennis Jennette tossed a three-hit, complete game shutout in the nightcap to give BSC the sweep. Jennette (1-0) walked two and struck out six to pick up his first win of the season.
The Bears scored two runs in the first and two more in the second to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Mooney drove in two runs with a pair of RBI singles in each of the the first two innings.
Bridgewater added a couple of unearned runs in the fifth and sixth on an RBI double by Ian Williams and an RBI groundout by Steve Lambert.
Lambert, Mooney and Williams finished with two hits apiece in game two. Lambert finished 2-for-5 with a run scored. Mooney went 2-for-3, scored a run and reached twice on catcher's interference. Williams doubled twice in four at bats.
BSC (22-13) will travel to Westfield State College on Thursday for the opening game of the 2008 MASCAC Tournament. The Bears are the fourth seed in the tournament while Westfield is seeded first.
