BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --- The Bridgewater State
baseball team swept Framingham State this afternoon at Alumni Park
in a MASCAC make-up game that was originally scheduled yesterday at
Framingham. The Bears took the first game of the twinbill, 3-1, in
eight innings and the second game 6-4 to complete the sweep.
With the win, the BSC improves to 13-7 and 4-2 in the MASCAC while
the Rams slip to 3-15 and 0-6 in conference play.
In game one, senior Martin Anderson (Meriden, CT)
gave up one run (none earned) over seven 1/3 innings while
scattering four hits and striking out ten batters. After Anderson
(3-1) allowed two batters to reach base in the fourth, the
righthander set down 11 of the last 13 batters that he faced, with
six outs coming by way of strikeout.
Anderson has given up just one unearned run over his last 22 1/3
innings pitched.
Framingham junior Matt Nicholson (Watertown, MA)
went the distance going eight innings allowing three runs while
giving up seven hits. Nicholson (1-2) also struck out one and gave
up two walks.
Framingham State went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning.
After the first two batters singled, the runners advanced to second
and third on a passed ball. Junior Billy Capen (Franklin, MA-DH)
then plated freshman Joe Sheehan (Burlington,
MA-SS) with a sacrifice fly to left.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh, junior Brad
Koneski (North Dighton, MA-CF) led off the inning with a
double and moved to third on a ground ball out. Freshman Steven
Lambert (Milton, MA-RF) drove in Koneski to tie the score 1-1 on a
sacrifice fly.
After Nicholson got the first two outs in the eighth, Koneski
walked and advanced two bases on a steal and a wild pitch. Junior
Mark Claffey (Bellingham, MA-3B) doubled in
Koneski and then scored on an RBI single by Lambert.
Senior Brian Schilling (Weymouth, MA) entered the
game with one on and one out in the bottom of the eighth and
induced an inning-ending double play to pick up his first save of
the season.
Koneski led the Bears going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a
walk. Claffey also went 2-for-4, crossing the plate once with an
RBI. Sheehan went 2-for-3 with FSC’s lone run of the
game.
In game two, Bridgewater State went up 3-0 in the top of the first
as they strung together four strait hits with two outs. Smith
started the rally with a double and scored on a Kelly
LaDow (East Falmouth, MA-C) single. After freshman
Jeff Poupolo (Brockton, MA-DH) singled to put
runners on second and third, junior Dave Kiloski
(Lowell, MA-1B) made it a 3-0 game with a single to right.
BSC added an unearned run in the top of the second, highlighted by
an RBI single by Michael Vona (Malden, MA-3B).
Framingham pushed across their first run of the game in the bottom
of the second and moved to second and third on back-to-back wild
pitches. One out later, Vona drove in Sheehan with an RBI single to
right.
The Rams knotted the score 4-4 with a three-run fourth inning.
Steve Tramontozzi (Watertown, MA-RF) tripled in
two runs and then scored on an RBI single by Sheehan.
After the fourth inning, freshman BSC starter Greg
Potts (Milton, MA) settled down to retire nine out of the
last 10 batters he faced.
The Bears broke the tie in the top of the seventh thanks in part
to some shaky Framingham defense as the Rams committed two errors
in the inning. With one out, junior Kenny Downey
(Braintree, MA-2B) reached on an error and moved to second on an
infield single by sophomore Brian Medairos
(Brockton, MA-SS). One out later, Claffey walked to load the bases.
Lambert then hit a hard ground ball to second, that was misplayed
allowing two runs to score putting the Bears up 6-4.
Schilling put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but
stuck out the last two batters to pick up his second save of the
doubleheader.
Downey finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored
while LaDow was 2-for-4 crossing the plate once.
George Schreiner (Valley Stream, NY-2B) went 2-for-3 with
a run scored for the Rams.
Potts earned his third win of the season on the mound for the
Bears. Potts went six innings allowing four runs on seven hits to
go along with four strikeouts.
Senior Sean Tupper (Marlboro, MA) started game
two for Framingham State. Tupper hurled five 1/3 innings giving up
four runs (three earned) on ten hits. The righthander struck out
five while allowing two walks.
Tupper was relieved by freshman Kevin Loveless
(Wakefield, MA) who was tagged for the loss. Loveless went 1 2/3
innings giving up two runs on one hit to go along with one
walk.
With two hits this afternoon, including a double in game two,
senior Steve Smith (East Taunton, MA-LF) inches
closer to Ed Grueter’s (1988-91) career hits record of 215.
Smith has tallied 210 his in his career at BSC.
Both teams will host MASCAC opponents on Tuesday. The Bears will
entertain Mass Maritime at 2 o’clock while the Rams will
face-off against Salem at 2:30 P.M.
