LaDow and Hansen Homer in 19-4 Win over UMass Boston

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --- Senior Dana Hansen (Hanover, MA-DH) and junior Kelly LaDow (East Falmouth, MA-C) each belted back-to-back home runs in the second inning to spark Bridgewater State College's 19-4 win over UMass Boston in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Park.

The Bears, winners of four of the last five games, improve their record to 9-3 while the Beacons slip to 7-11 with the loss.

Bridgewater State finished with 17 hits while five BSC players would also register two or more hits in the game. 

Bridgewater State was led by Hansen who was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a game-high four RBI's. Junior classmates Kenney Downey (Braintree, MA-2B), Brad Koneski (North Dighton, MA-CF), and LaDow each went 2-for-4. Koneski and LaDow batted-in and scored two runs while Downey would cross home-plate twice for the Bears.  Freshman Jeff Poupolo (Brockton, MA-RF) also went 2-for-2 off the bench with a run scored and an RBI while Koneski and sophomore Brian Medairos (Brockton, MA-SS) would finish with three stolen bases apiece.

Freshmen Tim Fontane (Worcester, MA-DH) and Eric Salvador (Middleboro, MA-C) each paced the Beacons by going 3-for-4. Fontane crossed the plate twice while plating one run and Salvador chipped in with a run and an RBI.

UMass Boston scored two runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by an RBI double by Salvador.

Bridgewater State would tie the game 2-2 on a sacrifice fly by LaDow and on an RBI single by Hansen.

The Bears would then take the 7-2 lead with five runs in the second, highlighted by the solo home-runs by LaDow and Hansen. BSC would go on to score six more runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one more in the eighth.

UMass Boston plated two runs in the eighth on a single by Fontane and a double by sophomore Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH-1B).

Junior Dave Liffers (Norwell, MA) picked up his first win of the season in relief. After freshman Greg Potts (Milton, MA) went the first two innings of the ballgame and then he was relieved Liffers, Dave Matthews (Williston, VT), Jeff Sarahs (Whitman, MA), who each pitched went two innings. Freshman Chris Horgan (Plymouth, MA) pitched a perfect ninth inning to end the game.

 Junior Patrick McCarthy (Canandaigua, NY) took the loss on the mound for the Beacons. McCarthy gave up six earned runs in the 1 1/3 innings he pitched to go along with four walks and a strikeout. Over the next 7 2/3 innings the UMass Boston bullpen gave up 12 runs (10 earned) and seven walks while tallying five strikeouts.

Both teams will play tomorrow afternoon. Bridgewater State will host Southern Maine at 3:30 P.M. while UMass Boston will be entertained by Worcester State at Assumption at 3 o'clock. Sophomore Spencer Hatstat (Clinton, MA) will be on the mound for the Bears in tomorrow's match-up versus the Huskies.
