As a freshman, Simao Mendes has been a pleasant surprise for the men's soccer team at Bridgewater State College.

The 6-foot-1 striker from Brockton has a team-leading four goals, and nine points, in the Bears' first five games.

"I didn't know much about him coming into preseason,'' said Bridgewater coach K. Brendan Adams. "However, as a freshman coming into the college game, sometimes its a difficult transition from high school. Simao has handled it and has played at times like an experienced senior.''
