Massachusetts Special Olympics 24th Annual South Sectional Aquatics Meet

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- On Sunday, April 22nd, the Bridgewater State University Department of Athletics and Recreations hosted the 24th Annual South Sectional Aquatics Meet for Massachusetts Special Olympics at John J. Kelly Gymnasium and the Dr. Mary Jo Moriarty Pool.

Over 200 athletes competed at the state qualifying meet. The athletes competed in all four competitive strokes (free, back, breast, IM) as well as the freestyle and medley relays.

The success of event always relies heavily on volunteers and the response from the town and college community has been incredible over the years. And this year was no different as there were over a 100 volunteers who escorted athletes to the pool area, presented awards to athletes, helped time swimming events and distributed athletes lunches. They also organized games and other activities for athletes to participate in when they were not competing and managed the parent's lounge.

The volunteers from the Bridgewater State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, in particular, were instrumental to the success of the event.

The event was coordinated by BSU head swimming & diving coach, Michael Caruso, and Associate Director of Athletics, Susan Crosby-Tangen.
