Eight Inducted into BSU Athletics Hall of Fame

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The 2019 Bridgewater State University Athletics Hall of Fame Induction and Banquet ceremony was held Friday evening, October 18th, in the Rondileau Campus Center Ballroom and an audience of over 150 was on hand as eight former student-athletes were inducted into the hall.

The eight members of the 23rd induction class honored on Friday night were Betsy Ahearn '05Christopher Carr '01Carrie (Kuprycz) Consalvi '01Andrea (Erickson) Crespi '90Robert Mason '65, Michael McCarthy '14, Timothy Millerick '82, G'86, and James Quinlan '08.

President Frederick W. Clark Jr., Esq., '83, was on hand to offer welcoming remarks from the university during this Homecoming Weekend and to congradulate the new members. AssociateDirector of Athletics, Michael Storey, who also serves as the chairperson of the Hall of Fame committee, emceed the evening's proceedings and introduced each of the new members. Director of Athletics, Dr. Marybeth Lamb, made note of the athletics highlights from the 2018-2019 academic year and the successes of the current student-athletes on the court, in the classroom and in the community.

Betsy Ahearn ‘05 (Softball) – One of the top pitchers in Bridgewater State softball history, Betsy Ahearn took the circle for the Bears from 1999 to 2002. In 104 appearances over four seasons on the diamond, Betsy posted a record of 63-23 with 62 complete games, 22 shutouts, and a 1.26 earned run average. She also fanned 557 batters in 571.1 innings of work. Betsy holds school records for strikeouts in a season (190) and a game (18). She is also the only pitcher in school history to throw back-to-back no-hitters. A four-time All-MASCAC selection, Betsy was also named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-New England team in each of her four seasons including first-team honors in 2001 and 2002. She also earned NFCA Division III Third Team All-American accolades for the 2001 campaign. Betsy helped lead the Bridgewater State softball team to four consecutive MASCAC titles and four straight NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. The team posted an overall record of 136-45-3 (.747) during her career including an impressive 53-3 (.946) mark against MASCAC teams. The Bears captured the New England Regional championship during her freshman season of 1999 and advanced to the NCAA Division III World Series. Betsy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Bridgewater State in 2005. She also went on to earn her master's in special education as well as a certificate of advanced graduate studies in positive behavior supports from Assumption College in 2007. Following graduation, Betsy served as a pitching coach at Wellesley College for four seasons, Brown University for one, and also worked at Planet Fastpitch for four years. She is presently a special education teacher at a dual language school in Escondido, California. Betsy currently resides in San Diego with her husband, Enow Tanjong, and son, Drake.

Christopher Carr ‘01 (Football) – Chris Carr was an outstanding multi-dimensional student-athlete on the Bridgewater State football team from 1998-2000. Chris played wide receiver and also served as a placekicker, punter and defensive back for the bears. In three seasons on the gridiron, Chris hauled in 48 receptions for 1,295 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also converted 92 extra points to go along with six field goals and averaged 34.5 yards per punt. Defensively, Chris notched 58 tackles and five interceptions. Chris holds school records for most extra points in a season (54) as well as longest pass reception (95 yards) and longest punt (73 yards). He also set the school record (since broken) for points in a season with 117 in 2000. Chris ranks second all-time in program history in extra points (92) and yards per catch (27.0). he is also sixth in scoring (238 pts.), seventh in receiving touchdowns (21) and 11th in receiving yards (1,295). Chris helped the Bears capture back-to-back New England Football Conference (NEFC) championships and advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament in 1999 and 2000. In 2000, Chris was named the most valuable player of the NEFC championship game as he hauled in seven receptions for 188 yards and three touchdowns. For his outstanding performance on the gridiron, Chris was named to the NEFC All-Conference Team four times at three different positions (DB, K, WR). He was also a two-time ECAC Division III Northeast All-Star at wide receiver and kicker in 2000, as well as a Football Gazette Division III East Region Second Team selection at wide receiver. A 2001 graduate of Bridgewater State, Chris earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology with a concentration in criminology. He has been a police officer for the Boston Police Department for the last 14 years and is currently assigned to the Special Operations Division. Chris presently resides in Marshfield with his wife, Kate, and three sons, Mason, Nathan and Easton.

Carrie (Kuprycz) Consalvi ‘01 (Softball) – A three-year member of the Bridgewater State softball team, Carrie (Kuprycz) Consalvi was an outstanding designated player and catcher for the Bears from 1998 to 2000. In 130 career games, Carrie batted .387 (146-377) with 38 doubles, nine triples, 21 home runs and 23 stolen bases to go along with 107 runs scored and 122 runs batted in. She also posted a .703 slugging percentage and a .488 on-base percentage. Carrie currently ranks fifth all-time in program history in batting average and her .535 on-base percentage in 1999 ranks fourth. Carrie helped the Bears capture three straight MASCAC championships and make three consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearances during her career. The team won the New England Regional championship and advanced to the Division III World Series in both 1998 and 1999. All told, the Bears posted a record of 109-30-1 (.782) from 1998 to 2000 including a 40-2 (.952) record versus MASCAC opponents. For outstanding performance on the softball diamond, Carrie garnered All-MASCAC First Team accolades and was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-New England First Team in each of her three seasons. She was also selected to the ECAC Division III New England All-Star Team and was an NFCA Division III Second Team All-American in both 1998 and 1999. Carrie graduated from Bridgewater State in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training. She also earned a Master of Science in nursing from UMass Dartmouth in 2013. Carrie is currently a certified nurse practitioner at Urology Associates of Cape Cod and works per diem at Cape Cod Hospital. She presently resides in Sandwich, Massachusetts with her husband, Dave (a 2000 alum), and daughter, Mia.

Andrea (Erickson) Crespi ‘90 (Field Hockey, Women's Lacrosse) – A two-sport athlete, Andrea (Erickson) Crespi was a four-year letterwinner for both the Bridgewater State field hockey and women's lacrosse teams from 1986 to 1990. Andrea tallied 19 goals and 19 assists for the field hockey squad and garnered All-MASCAC honors in each of her last three seasons including first team accolades in 1988. She was a captain her senior year and helped the team make three ECAC Tournament appearances as well as a trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament in 1988. All told, the Bridgewater State field hockey team posted a record of 45-18-8 (.690) during Andrea's career including a 21-4 (.840) mark against MASCAC teams. The Bears captured the MASCAC regular-season crown in both 1987 and 1988. In the sport of lacrosse, Andrea notched 75 goals and 25 assists for 100 points. A two-time captain and team MVP, she set the school single-game record (since equaled) with ten goals against Babson College in 1989. Andrea was also the 1989 recipient of the Martin T. Rizzo Award. Andrea graduated with a degree in elementary education in 1990, she went on to Bristol Community College and passed her licensure to become a registered dental hygienist. Andrea now runs the non-profit Cranberry Country Pony Club which blends her love of athletics horses and teaching youth. Andrea presently resides in Berkley, Massachusetts with her husband of 27 years, Joe, and three daughters, Briel, Bailey, and Jillian.

Robert Mason ‘65 (Football) – A three-year member of the Bridgewater State football team, Robert Mason played linebacker for the Bears in 1961, 1963 and 1964 and was captain of the team his senior year. Former head football coach Ed Swenson (HOF '86) praised Bob as being one of the most dedicated and inspirational leaders he had ever seen. Bob won a number of awards during his playing days including the Robert V. Fey Memorial Award of Brotherhood, the Lester Lane Award, the Men's Athletic Association Award, and the Martin T. Rizzo Memorial Award. The Martin T. Rizzo Award was presented to the student who best typified the character, devotion, and sportsmanship of the former athlete. Bob is a 1965 graduate of Bridgewater State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He also earned a Masters of Education in Counseling and Guidance from Salem State College in 1970. Bob worked in the education field for 37 years including 20 1/2 years at Greater Lawrence Voc. Tech. where he retired in 2002. He spent six seasons as a varsity football coach at Central Catholic High School from 1965-1966 and 1975-1978. Bob resides in Andover, Massachusetts with his wife of 53 years (and classmate), Doris. They have two daughters and three grandchildren.

Michael McCarthy ‘14 (Football) –  A dual-threat quarterback, Mike McCarthy started 41 consecutive games for the Bridgewater State football team from 2010 to 2013. The team’s overall record during his career was 27-14. Mike helped lead the Bears to the 2011 ECAC Northeast Bowl and 2012 NCAA Division III Tournament. In his four seasons, Mike completed 361 out of 707 pass attempts (51.1%) for 4,672 yards and 41 touchdowns. He also rushed for 2,806 yards and 42 touchdowns. Mike ended his career as the Bears' all-time leader in total offense (7,478 yards), passing yards (since broken), and completions (since broken). He also ranks second in rushing touchdowns and rushing attempts (670), third in pass attempts, and fourth in rushing yards, completion percentage, passing touchdowns and scoring (252 pts.). During his senior year, Mike was tied for sixth in all of Division III in points responsible for (210). As team captain, he was selected to the All-MASCAC First Team in 2013. For his outstanding leadership and performance on the field, Mike was twice selected BSU Offensive MVP and won the 2013 Tom Cook Award. Mike is also the only three-time recipient of the Lee Harrington Most Valuable Player award for his performances in the Cranberry Bowl. Following his career, Mike was selected to play in the All-American Bowl and signed two professional contracts playing for the Geneva Seahawks in Switzerland and for the New Hampshire Brigade in the arena football league. He also coached quarterbacks for the BSU football team from 2014 to 2016, helping guide the Bears to an NCAA Tournament bid in 2016. Mike graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education he is currently teaching health at Plymouth North High School and is in his first season as the offensive coordinator for the Plymouth North varsity football team. He is also the owner and operator of M2 QB Academy, a quarterback training business mentoring youth, high school quarterbacks throughout New England. He and his wife, Hannah, presently reside in Plymouth, Mass.

Timothy Millerick ‘82 G'86 (Football) – Timothy Millerick, a defensive back for the Bridgewater State football team, played for the Bears from 1978 to 1981. He notched 12 career interceptions including a school-record eight (since broken) in 1980. He returned an interception for 63 yards and a touchdown against Plymouth State in 1980 and tailed 238 tackles (142 solo) over his final two seasons. He also recovered two fumbles and broke up four passes in 1981 and even hauled in two receptions for 39 yards that season off of fake punts. Former head football coach Peter Mazzaferro (HOF '94) noted that Tim was always assigned to cover the best receiver and was outstanding on punt coverage. The 1980 Bears' defense set the school-record, which still stands, for fewest points allowed in a season with 61 (6.8 ppg). Tim served as co-captain, was elected the team MVP and received the coaches award for his senior season. He was also selected to the All-New England Football Conference (NEFC) Team in both 1980 and 1981. Tim graduated from Bridgewater State in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. He also earned his master's degree in counseling from Bridgewater State in 1986. Following graduation, he served as the defensive coordinator on the Bears coaching staff for a number of years. With a 37-year career in higher education, Tim is currently employed at Austin College in Sherman, Texas where he has served 25 years as the vice president for student affairs. He was also the athletic director at Austin from 1996 to 2010. Tim has received national recognition for his work in the field of student affairs and higher education from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). Tim presently lives in Sherman, Texas with his wife, Carol (a 1982 alum). They have two children, Ashley and Gregory.

James Quinlan ‘08 (Wrestling) –  James Quinlan competed on the Bridgewater State wrestling team from 2004 to 2008 and was a three-year captain. Jim wrapped up his colligate career with 137 wins including an impressive 43-6 (.878) record in 2006-2007. He holds the Bears all-time record for wins and pins (69), and also set the single-season record with 23 pins in 2006-2007. Jim garnered All-New England honors in each of his four seasons including a first-place finish out the 184-pound weight class at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) championships in 2008. Jim competed out of the 174-pound weight class his freshman season when he set the Bears' rookie records (since broken) for wins (26) and pins (15). He transitioned to the 184-pound weight class his sophomore year and eventually earned a trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament as a senior in 2008. In the 2006-2007 campaign, Jim tallied 92 dual meet points which is second only to teammate John Fralick who notched 94 that same season. The 2006-2007 squad set the program record for dual meet wins (19) and highest finish at the NEWA championships coming in second with 104.5 points. Jim Graduated from Bridgewater State in 2008 with a degree in criminal justice. He began a career in law enforcement in 2010 and has been with the Nashua (NH) Police Department since 2015. He resides in Nashua with his wife, Dasha, and daughter, Kira.

The induction of Ahearn, Carr, Consalvi, Crespi, Mason, McCarthy, Millerick and Quinlan brings the BSU Athletics Hall of Fame's total membership to 147.
